Oils on hardboard.

Everyone's favorite recent work by me. Painted this one in my summer course in Orivesi. The theme of the course was childhood and memories, and this here depicts my childhood teddy bear Yki Nalle in the background, and another one owned by some old lady in the course.

I attempted to portray the feelings of loss and fear associated with growing up, looking back into childhood and knowing you can never go back. The plan was to make the spectator identify with the smaller teddy bear up front, while the bigger one (which is my real childhood teddy bear) is looming there right behind you. I tried to make it as dramatic as possible, despite of the cutesy subject.

Did I succeed? Hell no. Everyone just thought: Awwww.... that's so sweet.

The moral of the story: there's no escaping the inherent cuteness of teddy bears. LOL

The Childhood Teddybear is a brilliantly whimsical painting by *valkea. It reminds me of the comforts of being small. (Suggested by `RockGirl1582 and Featured by `guruubii)

haha! yeah, you can't do symbolism like that with teady bears, people are too familiar with them from their own time... but ACTUALLY ... i think i thought more along the lines of what you were trying to portray than "Aww" -
At first I saw the LARGE bear - which is more appealing and strange to me - i almost couldnt see the other bear, its normalness shrunk it to invisibility.
But, Im also biased because my sister had a brown bear sorta like that named BeedyBear. (70's)
AND THEN I thought of memories and the wistfullness of looking back.

hehe maybe you should have added fangs and red eyes to the bigger teddy, it would have made it more obvious ^^ ... "bad guy" / "good guy"

haha well, without kidding, i really like the concept, but it's true i really enjoyed the picture once i read it. Otehrwise i was more : "oh... two teddies.. ugggh, cuteness..."

very nice piece again. like allways

It is lovely, it is certainly the coldest teddy bear picture I have ever seen. It looks to me like a teddy bear with a jungian shadow self looming behind it.

Ha, thanks very much. Glad to know it didn't completely fail to convey the idea.

I think the awww factor just comes with the obvious associations people have with the imagery... but no, I don't think you failed, not by a longshot.

This makes me sad and whistful and afraid of growing up. I think it has to do with the way you've painted this, in faded, mute tones... like a memory that's slowly darkening and slipping away.

God, what a bedwetting-inducing moment. :P

Aaah! This is just excellent. I really like your choice of colors. And this subject is very, very dear to me :D The composition, simplified background and varied brushstrokes makes this painting very interesting.

I just read your description - hell no! This is far from beeing sweet. Teddybears make me feel like I was child again... for a moment. Then the moment passes and I feel the pain of beeing a grown up even more. And there's nothing in the world that can look more sad and melancholic then a teddybear, that is left alone on a shelf or in the attic - the small hands have grown and never reach for it anymore.
